MAGNETIC NORTH CONTINUES SPONSORSHIP OF BRITPICS 3

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 16, 2002

(TORONTO) Magnetic North is proudly sponsoring three films at the third annual Britpics British Film Week taking place at the Bloor Cinema from July 19-25, 2002. The three films are “Everyone’s Happy”, directed by Frances Lea, “The Battle Of Orgreave”, directed by Mike Figgis and “Motion”, directed by Tom Clay.

All three movies were shot on video, not film, which was the industry standard. We find that more and more young filmmakers are shooting on video for a number of reasons, including budget, ease of shooting and alternative style. But it’s also interesting how a veteran filmmaker, Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas, Hotel) is also using video instead of film.”

“These filmmakers may well be in the forefront of a whole new way of shooting films,” echoes Bruce Grant, Chief Operating Officer of Magnetic North. “We are sponsoring these films, which are being projected from Digital Video, not film, to showcase alternate ways of making movies. ‘Star Wars: Attack of the Clones’ was successfully distributed digitally in about 200 theatres across North America this spring. We believe digital distribution will continue to grow exponentially each year and become the new standard in theatrical exhibition.”

EVERYONE’S HAPPY was make with a budget of only about $20,000 CAD. Derek Elley of Variety Magazine writes “Cast chemistry is excellent and director Frances Lea, who’s worked in both animation and theatre, focuses everything on dialogue and performances. Played in a naturalistic, ever-so-slightly wacky style, the pic simply follows (several) relationships over a couple of days, leading to a neat conclusion”. The screening takes place on Tuesday July 23 at 7:00PM

THE BATTLE OF ORGREAVE was commissioned by Channel 4 in England and captures a June 2001 re-enactment of the notorious 1984 South Yorkshire riots between striking mine-workers and the police. This movie brought together members of historical re-enactment societies from across Britain with local people from the mining communities of South Yorkshire, many of whom were present on the field in 1984. The screening takes place on Tuesday July 23 at 9:30PM.

MOTION traces the existence of homeless middle aged Don, struggling as his life falls apart in Brighton, Britain’s working class seaside town during one cold off-peak season. The sky is gray, the amusement pier deserted and the people scarce. The screening takes place on Tuesday July 23 at 10:30PM.

Britpics will be presenting seventeen feature films, most of them Canadian or Toronto premieres. Other information can be found on the website at www.torontobritpics.com. The Britpics info-line is 416-604 4702 and the general e-mail address is info@torontobritpics.com.

MAGNETIC NORTH POSTS COURT TV'S FIRST EVER M.O.W.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 22, 2002

(TORONTO) Magnetic North recently completed the post production of Court TV's first original M.O.W. entitled "Guilt By Association". Produced by Shadow Box Entertainment and JB Media, and internationally distributed by Hearst Entertainment, "Guilt By Association" is a 90-minute Movie Of The Week starring Academy Award Winning Actress, Mercedes Ruehl.

"This M.O.W. provided Magnetic North with many challenges," states Peter Armstrong, Director of Operations at Magnetic North. "Due to the fact that the movie took place in a prison, there were an unusually high number of ADR, loop group and add lines to be done. Well over 500 in fact. We only had two weeks from locked picture to final delivery, a time frame that would have been almost impossible for any post house to complete. Thanks to an incredible team effort by our staff, we were able to finish on time and on budget."

Wes Irwin, Director of Post Production at Hearst Entertainment in Los Angeles adds, "My past experience with Magnetic North made me confident that they were the team for this TV movie. I always expect good things from the post house that I select, however. I was not prepared for this: A FANTASTIC JOB - by Magnetic North."

"From Dailies through delivery to the network, the job Magnetic North did was virtually flawless. Colour correction, online, titles, dirt-fix and even the mix went like clockwork. Needless to say, I am elated about the results." Irwin states.

"Guilt By Association" was directed by Graham Campbell, edited by Michael Rea, produced by Terry Gould and Helene Valinsky with Ann Carlucci serving as the Executive Producer.

"K-19: THE WIDOWMAKER" HEADS TO MAGNETIC NORTH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 17, 2001

(TORONTO) The largest budget feature film to hit the shores of Canada in many years will go to Magnetic North for film transfers by one of the country's premier audio and video post production facilities.

K-19: The Widowmaker stars Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson and is being shot in Moscow, Halifax and Toronto. The big budget thriller is based on the true story of a Russian submarine crew during the Cold War.

"Magnetic North will be doing the dailies film transfers in a unique way", states K. Bruce Grant, Chief Operating Officer of Magnetic North. "Typically, we transfer the original 35mm film to Digital Betacam video tape. In this case, we are transferring the film to Digital Betacam, then digitizing the video directly to digital media. Magnetic North is also digitizing the audio to the Avid MediaStation, which allows the production to save time and money."

"When we started talks with Production back in February, it was abundantly clear that time and expertise were of the essence on this project", says Peter Armstrong, Director of Operations. "We have handled major feature film projects like this before and were able to offer our experience. K-19's editor, Academy Award winner Walter Murch, impressed upon us the need for impeccable quality and timely delivery when he came to our facility. Walter Murch was the editor of such films as The English Patient, Godfather II and III and Apocalypse Now, and we are very happy about his confidence in us."

The Avid MediaStation has previously been used by Magnetic North on such projects as David Cronenberg's eXistenZ.

Magnetic North is a full service post production facility serving the international film, television and commercial community.
